Everything you wanna to know about Lego 75355 UCS X-wing Starfighter (2023 version)|Mark's Magic

The LEGO Star Wars 75355 X-Wing Starfighter is a standout addition to the Ultimate Collector Series (UCS), offering fans an intricate and display-worthy model of the iconic T-65 X-Wing. Released in May 2023, this set has quickly become a favorite among LEGO enthusiasts and Star Wars collectors alike.

origin

With the fall of the Republic and the rise of the Galactic Empire, Imperial naval forces commissioned the Incom Corporation to develop a next-generation starfighter for its fleet. The result was the X-wing starfighter, a prototype inspired by legendary ships like the Z-95 Headhunter and the ARC-170, both of which have appeared in various LEGO Star Wars sets.

Armed with powerful laser cannons, a hyperdrive, and defensive shields, the LEGO X-wing model mirrors its in-universe counterpart’s reputation for resilience and versatility—qualities that TIE fighters sorely lack. Production of the real X-wing was initially halted due to Imperial cost concerns, with the Empire favoring the cheaper and more expendable TIE models. However, LEGO fans can still build this incredible ship with detailed sets such as LEGO Star Wars X-Wing Starfighter (75355) and other collector editions.

Later, a group of Rebel agents made contact with sympathetic Incom engineers, who secretly turned the X-wing over to the Rebel Alliance. From that moment on, the X-wing, both in galaxy lore and in LEGO form, became a symbol of hope. It played a pivotal role in Rebel victories, including the legendary assault on the Death Star—scenes beautifully recreated in sets like the LEGO Star Wars Yavin 4 Rebel Base (75365) and LEGO X-Wing Trench Run Diorama (75329).

Whether you’re building your fleet or recreating epic battles from the original trilogy, the LEGO Star Wars X-wing remains one of the most iconic and essential starfighters for any collector or fan of the saga.

The packaging of the LEGO Star Wars 75355 X-Wing Starfighter set aligns with the sleek aesthetic of the 18+ Ultimate Collector Series (UCS) line. It features an all-black design complemented by a black border along the bottom edge. Prominently displayed in all four corners are the LEGO and Star Wars logos, reinforcing the set's branding. The front of the box showcases the X-Wing Starfighter at a side angle, providing a dynamic view of the model, though some may prefer a more head-on perspective to fully appreciate its design.

Turning to the back, the box presents the LEGO 75355 X-Wing Starfighter in its landed mode, securely positioned on its display stand. Accompanying this are mini graphics that highlight the set's features and comparison images, offering insights into its design evolution and functionalities. This detailed presentation underscores the set's appeal to adult fans of LEGO (AFOLs) and Star Wars enthusiasts alike.

x-wing packages

Inside the LEGO Star Wars 75355 X-Wing Starfighter box, you'll find a series of numbered bags ranging from 1 to 10, designed to guide you step-by-step through the building process. The set also includes a high-quality instruction manual, along with the unique cockpit canopy piece and the UCS display plaque—both thoughtfully packaged separately to ensure protection during transit.

However, one downside is that the cockpit glass element arrived with minor scratches, likely due to insufficient protective packaging. For a premium LEGO Star Wars set like the 75355 X-Wing, it would’ve been ideal if this transparent piece were placed in its own dedicated bag to maintain its pristine appearance for display.

Still, the contents are well-organized overall, providing a solid unboxing experience for collectors and fans alike looking to add the LEGO 75355 X-Wing Starfighter to their Ultimate Collector Series display.

The instruction manual for the LEGO Star Wars 75355 X-Wing Starfighter comes neatly packaged in a flat cardboard envelope, providing added protection during shipping—a thoughtful touch for collectors. The manual itself features the modern all-white design that LEGO now uses for many 18+ sets. While clean and minimalistic, some fans might find it a bit plain, especially compared to older manuals that featured more vibrant cover art.

Nevertheless, the inclusion of the protective packaging aligns with the premium nature of the LEGO 75355 X-Wing Starfighter set, enhancing the overall unboxing experience for LEGO Star Wars enthusiasts and UCS collectors.

Minifigures

Lego x-wing minifigures review

The LEGO Star Wars 75355 X-Wing Starfighter set includes two standout minifigures: Luke Skywalker in his Rebel pilot gear and the ever-faithful astromech droid, R2-D2. This version of Luke is exclusive to the LEGO 75355 X-Wing set and represents the most detailed depiction of the character in his iconic orange flight suit to date. With intricate arm printing and dual-moulded legs featuring printed boot detailing, this figure easily ranks among the best in any LEGO Star Wars minifigure collection.

R2-D2, while not exclusive to this set, is the same detailed version seen in LEGO Star Wars set 75339 Death Star Trash Compactor. Notably, he includes back printing on his cylindrical body—a small but appreciated detail. Fans are hopeful this level of detail becomes standard across future LEGO Star Wars sets, especially for beloved characters like R2.

Luke’s minifigure includes a double-sided head print—one side with the classic visor down, and the other with the visor retracted—adding display versatility. He also sports the classic Rebel helmet mold, originally introduced in 1999, further connecting this UCS LEGO 75355 X-Wing Starfighter to the nostalgic roots of the LEGO Star Wars theme.

These premium minifigures elevate the appeal of the LEGO 75355 X-Wing set, making it a must-have for both dedicated Star Wars fans and serious LEGO collectors.

Building Experience

The LEGO Star Wars 75355 X-Wing Starfighter offers a rewarding and well-structured build process, especially for fans of large-scale LEGO Star Wars sets.

  • Technic Core Foundation
The build begins with a strong internal framework using LEGO Technic elements. This core forms the structural backbone of the X-Wing’s elongated fuselage. As with many advanced LEGO Star Wars builds, you’ll experience a few “I’m not sure how this will work” moments that gradually resolve as the sections come together, making for a very satisfying construction journey.

  • Smart Wing Mechanism
One of the most iconic features of the LEGO 75355 X-Wing is its S-foil wing mechanism. Surprisingly, the engineering here is simpler than expected but still very effective. Each set of wings rotates using 4x4 round plates with a central cut-out. The upper right wing connects to the lower left, and the upper left to the lower right—linked using Technic bricks. This elegant solution captures the X-Wing’s signature open-flight pose perfectly.

  • Satisfying UCS Experience
True to its Ultimate Collector Series nature, this LEGO Star Wars set combines display-worthy detail with clever mechanics. The mix of Technic precision and classic brick-building ensures that both seasoned builders and Star Wars enthusiasts will find the LEGO 75355 X-Wing Starfighter a standout addition to their collection.

One of the more enjoyable moments during the LEGO 75355 X-Wing Starfighter build comes when placing the curved brackets—originally introduced in LEGO® Friends sets. These pieces fit perfectly over 1x2 curved bricks and play a crucial role in locking both ends of the wing mechanism firmly in place. It’s a simple yet satisfying step that demonstrates LEGO’s clever part usage across themes.

You’ll also notice red elastic bands integrated into the build, which add the necessary tension for the S-foils' opening and closing mechanism. It’s another smart engineering detail that enhances the functionality of this LEGO Star Wars set, giving it more than just static display value.

And then there’s the rear section—arguably one of the highlights of the LEGO Star Wars 75355 X-Wing model. Packed with greebles (those small, detailed parts that give a model texture and realism), this area feels like a playground for the designer. From cleverly repurposed elements to a recolored LEGO games controller, every piece seems to have been selected to mimic the kit-bashed look of the original movie prop. It’s an area rich with character and a testament to the thoughtfulness poured into this UCS set.

Connecting the large nose section of the LEGO 75355 X-Wing Starfighter is surprisingly minimal—each half is secured with just two clips. While it doesn’t necessarily make the model feel flimsy, it does come as a surprise for a LEGO Star Wars set of this size and complexity. There are several instances like this during the build where large sections are attached using fewer connection points than expected.

That said, one particularly clever design technique helps align the two halves of the fuselage: 1x2 curved wedges and "coffee stirrer" elements protrude slightly and nest perfectly into locator slots within the nose cone. This entire front section then slides smoothly into place on a pair of red Technic axles, offering a satisfying and secure fit.

The latter stages of the LEGO Star Wars 75355 X-Wing build focus on constructing the wings, engines, and laser cannons. These steps involve a fair amount of repetition, as you’ll be stacking identical plates and SNOT (Studs Not On Top) bricks four times to replicate the symmetrical layout of the X-Wing’s iconic design. While this part of the build isn’t the most dynamic, it’s faithful to the structure of the original starfighter and delivers impressive results when completed.

Final Model

Let’s move on to the model itself, starting with the display stand built in bag 5 of the LEGO Star Wars 75355 X-Wing. Like other LEGO Star Wars sets, the stand is simple but effective, holding the starfighter at a clean display angle.

The display stand connects via a 2×2 hole on the underside of the LEGO Star Wars 75355 X-Wing, and it’s sturdy enough to hold the weight of the model.

However, the two curved slopes intended as supports lack clutch power and tend to fall off frequently. It’s a frustrating flaw, though LEGO designers have acknowledged the issue and are working on a solution.

Here’s the LEGO Star Wars 75355 X-Wing on its display stand. The model is impressively large, measuring about 55 cm (21.5″) in length and 44 cm (17.5″) in width. It’s also quite heavy, making it one of the more substantial LEGO Star Wars sets to display.

Moving further back, we reach the cockpit, which features the return of the 2013 UCS-scale canopy piece. Unlike the previous version with stickers, this one is printed, which is a much-appreciated upgrade in the LEGO Star Wars 75355 X-Wing.

Moving to the back of the LEGO Star Wars 75355 X-Wing, this is one of my favorite angles of the set. The four engine thrusters have a relatively simple build but look fantastic, with the underside of plates used to add texture and depth to the design.

The back of the LEGO Star Wars 75355 X-Wing is one of my favorite angles of the starfighter, and it looks just as impressive here—almost as if it were ripped straight from the screen.

Final Thoughts

All things considered, I believe the LEGO Star Wars 75355 X-Wing is the best LEGO X-Wing in terms of aesthetics. The designers nailed the proportions and shaping perfectly. While the tapering hexagonal shape of the narrow body doesn’t translate perfectly to LEGO, they’ve replicated it exceptionally well.
