LEGO has officially launched the 42172 McLaren P1, adding to its prestigious lineup of 1:8 scale Technic Supercars. Car enthusiasts and automotive fans will be thrilled to witness this groundbreaking hybrid hypercar recreated in LEGO Technic, offering an impressive and detailed model that showcases both engineering precision and design excellence.
The McLaren P1™ redefined the concept of high-performance supercars, becoming the most exciting, capable, technologically advanced, and dynamically accomplished vehicle of its era. The P1™ utilized McLaren’s cutting-edge motorsport-derived engineering, incorporating revolutionary innovations in weight reduction, packaging, high-speed performance, powertrain, and aerodynamics.
Designed with the goal of being ‘the best driver’s car in the world, both on the road and on the track,’ the McLaren P1™’s specifications laid the perfect foundation for achieving this vision. This remarkable hypercar stands as a milestone for both McLaren and the evolution of high-performance hybrid vehicles.
With its advanced engineering and exceptional technological features, the McLaren P1™ was the ideal challenge for the LEGO Technic team to recreate at a 1:8 scale.
Part of the LEGO Technic Ultimate Car Concept Series, the new LEGO Technic McLaren P1™ model features 3,893 pieces and comes with a unique serial number that unlocks exclusive behind-the-scenes content. The model includes a 7-speed gearbox with two shifter drums, suspension, a V8 piston engine, an adjustable rear wing, and opening dihedral doors with an intricate mechanism. These details ensure an immersive building experience, faithfully reflecting the real McLaren P1™.
Developed through a close collaboration between the LEGO Technic design team and McLaren Automotive, the model embodies the high level of functionality and engineering excellence that McLaren is renowned for.

“From the aerodynamic exterior to the detailed V8 piston engine, the real McLaren P1™ is a remarkable car,” said the LEGO Technic team. “We were determined to capture every detail in our LEGO Technic model without compromise. One major challenge was recreating the iconic butterfly doors, which required a completely new mechanism to keep them open. This was a rewarding experience, and we can’t wait for supercar enthusiasts to explore the intricate details of the McLaren P1™ in LEGO Technic form.”
The LEGO McLaren P1 set features several new elements, including a unique wishbone piece that improves suspension construction, a new variation of the gear middle ring from the Bugatti Chiron set, and a custom panel for the A-pillar to replace flex hoses or axles. The set also introduces 54 new flame yellowish orange pieces, capturing the car’s signature color. Additionally, the set includes printed parts, eliminating the need for stickers. These new parts contribute to the accuracy and durability of the model. 
The LEGO McLaren P1 is a stunning and accurate replica of the iconic hypercar, with its unique color adding an extra touch of appeal. It surpasses the Ferrari model in the Ultimate Car Series in rigidity and gearbox complexity, thanks to newly introduced parts. While the gearbox might not serve a functional purpose, its inclusion is essential to maintain the "ultimate" title. The P1's aerodynamic body shape, ideal for Technic panel construction, likely made it a preferred choice over the Senna.
