LEGO Super Mario is entering a very different era!

Officially revealed at gamescom 2026, the new LEGO Super Mario 2027 sets shift the theme toward something fans have been asking for for years: recognizable LEGO minifigure-scale characters, smaller accessible sets, Mario Kart builds, and environments that can be combined into a much larger Mushroom Kingdom collection.

Eight new sets are scheduled for release on January 1, 2027, ranging from a $9.99 Mario starter build to the $99.99 Fire Mario & Bowser’s Castle. More importantly, the new wave puts characters and open-ended roleplay at the center of the theme rather than relying primarily on the electronic interactive system used by earlier LEGO Super Mario releases.

And judging by the early fan response, that change is landing well.

What Are the New LEGO Super Mario 2027 Sets?

The first 2027 wave includes eight sets covering classic Super Mario scenes, Mario Kart races, Mario’s home and Bowser’s fortress.

The Biggest Change: Super Mario Minifigures Finally Take Center Stage

The most important part of the LEGO Super Mario 2027 sets is not necessarily the number of bricks or even the individual locations.

It is the characters.

For collectors, this changes the appeal of the theme considerably.

Earlier LEGO Super Mario products were built around an interactive play system with electronic characters. That approach was distinctive, but it also meant Mario and Luigi did not naturally sit beside conventional LEGO minifigures, custom builds or character collections.

The 2027 wave feels much closer to the way fans already collect themes such as Sonic, Marvel or Star Wars: choose a character, build a scene around them, then keep expanding.

That is also one of the strongest themes in the early fan discussion. Many collectors have reacted as if LEGO has finally arrived at the Mario format they had wanted from the beginning.

The Prices May Be Just as Important as the Minifigures

Another major talking point is price.

LEGO could easily have introduced Mario minifigures through one or two premium sets, forcing collectors to spend heavily just to get the main cast.

Instead, Mario’s Pipe Jump starts at $9.99, Racing with Mario costs $14.99, and Mario’s Beach Adventures comes in at $19.99. Even Luigi & Bowser Jr.’s Race remains below $30 in the US.

That pricing strategy has received particularly positive reactions from fans.

 

• Several commenters noted that they would rather have a full wave of smaller, affordable sets than one enormous $300 display model. 
• Others were simply surprised that major characters were not all locked behind expensive builds.

A fan might begin with Mario.

Then add Luigi.

Then Bowser.

Then a Kart.

Before long, those small purchases stop feeling like isolated sets and start becoming a collection.

Bowser Is One of the Early Standouts

Mario may be the face of the theme, but Bowser is one of the characters generating the strongest reactions from the reveal.

Fans have praised the larger Bowser figure, with several comments highlighting how good it looks both for play and as a standalone character. Bowser’s Kart has also attracted attention, while Bowser’s Castle is one of the most consistently praised environments in the wave.

That puts two sets in particular on the collector radar.

Fire Mario & Bowser’s Castle 72060

At 850 pieces and $99.99, Fire Mario & Bowser’s Castle is the largest set in the January wave. The castle measures about 36 cm wide and 26 cm high and includes Fire Mario, Peach, Bowser, Koopa Troopa and Goomba in a larger fortress scene with traps, lava-ball features and hidden treasure.

Among the first eight sets, this is the one that most naturally works as a visual centerpiece.

That may become important once collectors start combining multiple 2027 sets rather than displaying them separately.

Mario Kart Could Become a Collection of Its Own

The other clear winner from the announcement is Mario Kart.

The January wave already gives collectors several racing-based options:

The appeal is easy to understand.

A single small Kart is fun.

Three or four Karts with different drivers begin to look like an actual race.

Fans were especially positive about the shell-firing functions, the different vehicles and the possibility of using the sets for custom Mario Kart games. Some comments moved very quickly from “this looks good” to clear buying intent.

Yoshi Is the Most Divisive Design So Far

Not every character has received the same level of enthusiasm.

Yoshi is probably the clearest example.

Some fans feel the proportions look unusual, the pose feels slightly awkward, or the body appears shortened compared with the character’s familiar game design. Others are more positive and have pointed out that the proportions appear to support one of Yoshi’s most important functions: allowing Mario or another character to ride on his back.

That makes Yoshi an interesting case where playability and display aesthetics do not completely align.

On his own, the figure may look a little unconventional.

Place him beside Mario’s House, Mario and other Mushroom Kingdom scenery, and the design starts to make more sense.

That distinction may matter more for display-focused collectors than it does for children actually playing with the set.

Stickers Are One of the Few Consistent Complaints

Another criticism appearing in the early discussion is the use of stickers.

Some longtime LEGO Super Mario collectors had appreciated the limited use of stickers in parts of the earlier interactive range. Seeing more stickered details in the new sets therefore feels like a step backward to collectors who value long-term presentation and printed elements.

This does not appear to be damaging enthusiasm for the wave overall.

In fact, several comments frame stickers as one of the few clear negatives in an otherwise very well-received lineup.

The same is true of the specialized character molds.

Some LEGO builders prefer more reusable, traditional elements for MOCs, while others feel characters such as Mario and Luigi simply need unique molds to look right.

So far, character accuracy appears to be winning that argument.

Fans Are Already Thinking Beyond the First Wave

Fans are already asking for future characters such as Daisy, Wario, Waluigi, Birdo, Captain Toad, Kamek, the Koopalings, Donkey Kong and Pauline.

That suggests collectors are already thinking beyond the eight announced sets and imagining a larger, long-term LEGO Super Mario collection.

If LEGO continues expanding the lineup, the question may soon shift from:

“Which LEGO Super Mario set should I buy?”

to:

“How should I display my collection?”

How Could You Display the LEGO Super Mario 2027 Sets Together?

Most of these new sets are relatively small.

That is excellent for affordability, but it creates a different display challenge.

Putting Mario’s Pipe Jump in one acrylic box, Racing with Mario in another, Luigi in a third, and Mario’s House somewhere else could make the overall collection feel fragmented.

The stronger approach may be to stop thinking in terms of individual set numbers and start thinking in terms of Mario worlds.

Create a Bowser’s Castle Theme

Fire Mario & Bowser’s Castle already gives collectors a strong central structure.

Around it, you could add:

• Fire Mario
• Peach
• Bowser
• Koopa Troopa
• Goomba
• Fire Luigi
• additional enemies from smaller sets

Instead of displaying 72060 as a completely isolated LEGO model, the castle could become the centerpiece of a broader Bowser-themed scene.

A dramatic lava or fortress backdrop would help visually connect characters that originally came from different boxes.

Turn the Mario Kart Sets Into One Race

The three racing sets are even easier to combine.

Mario, Luigi, Bowser Jr., Bowser and Toad can be arranged across a continuous track rather than separated by set.

A horizontal layout could use a curved course, starting grid, item-box graphics or a recognizable Mushroom Kingdom race environment to create movement across the full display.

This makes more visual sense than treating each vehicle as an individual centerpiece.

It also leaves room for additional racers if LEGO expands the lineup later.

Build a Mushroom Kingdom Scene Around Mario’s House

Mario’s Pipe Jump, Mario’s Beach Adventures and Yoshi at Mario’s House can work as a lighter Mushroom Kingdom collection.

A continuous landscape can connect the green pipe, Mario’s home, small character moments and other future locations.

This is where smaller sets become an advantage.

They can be repositioned.

Characters can move.

New scenes can be added without rebuilding an entire display.

Why a Multi-Set Mario Display May Make More Sense

The key is not simply fitting as many LEGO sets as possible into one case.

A good combined LEGO Super Mario display should feel intentional.

Bowser’s Castle can act as the visual anchor.

Mario Kart vehicles can create motion.

Mario, Luigi, Peach, Yoshi and Toad can give the scene character.

Smaller pipes, towers and environmental builds can fill the transitions between them.

That creates something much more interesting than a row of unrelated boxes.

It creates a recognizable LEGO Mushroom Kingdom.
